ONE | Help Haiti - Drop the debt

Take action for the immediate cancellation of Haiti's debt and to ensure new aid comes in the form of grants.

As further news reaches us from Haiti following Tuesday's earthquake, the true scale of the disaster is now emerging. Reports now suggest as many as 50,000 people may have died, with hundreds of thousands made homeless.This is a time for all of us to be reminded of our common humanity and do all that we can to help.

Shocking Haiti

Naomi Klein, author of Shock Doctrine appeared on Amy Goodman's show yesterday suggesting that aid to Haiti should come in the form of grants, not loans. The particularly astonishing moment in her interview came when she revealed that the Heritage Foundation had posted a piece on their website [subsequently removed] discussing how the US could use the situation to make further economic forays into Haiti. It is truly shameful that someone could think of this within 24 hours of a major disaster.

Back in the 90s, when I spent time in Central America, I lusted after the concept of powering a laptop with a solar panel and connecting with a sat phone. Alas, the cost was prohibitive.
