This morning we went to the Santa Fe Farmers Market and this band was busking at one end of the market. There was this cute little kid on a mouth harp. Is it just me or is anyone else bothered by their playing Last Dance with Mary Jane with this little kid?

 

Monsoon Awareness

Last night in Rancho Viejo, Eldorado, Lamy, and Galisteo, we were treated to one the most spectacular lightning shows we'd seen in a long time (if you know of some great pictures from last night, please post links in the comments of this post). As we were driving, I was suggesting that it was a bit early for monsoons and that I remembered them being closer to July. Apparently, though, we're pretty much right on target and this is Monsoon Awareness Week in New Mexico. Check out the info page at the National Weather Service:

New Mexico is affected by the North American Monsoon System (NAMS) every summer, and the “Monsoon Season” is designated as the period lasting from June 15th through September 30th. With the onset of the Monsoon, New Mexico is typically impacted by a variety of weather hazards that can often put the population at risk for serious injury or death. Thunderstorm frequency increases during this period, while exceptionally hot days are common as well.

WARNING: Facebook Clickjacking Attack Spreading Through News Feed

*Heavy sigh* Everytime I think I'll bow out of the May 31st Quit Facebook Day, I see another one of these. From Mashable:

The attack, which seems to repost the message without your permission, uses the oldest trick in the book. Once you click on the link, you’ll see Facebook grayed-out and a weird dialogue that looks like a Windows () error message, containing the phrase, “If I don’t, someone else do it.” If you click anywhere on the page, you’ll repost the link because your click will land on a moving frame with very low opacity. By clicking on it, you’re actually clicking the “publish” button on Facebook.

Trevor Project to provide suicide prevention training in Santa Fe

The Trevor Project, a crisis group for teens, will be in Santa Fe on May 16th to provide a 2-day training in suicide prevention. Much more detail is available in the Santa Fe Reporter, but here's your "mark the calendar" info:

What if the Gulf oil spill were over Albuquerque?

[OK - this is how awesome and unbelievable the size of the spill is. I originally typed 2500 sq. ft. below, rather than the 2500 sq. MILES it really is.]

I seem to be really into scary pictures and websites lately but I ran across a google map scenario tool set up by Dr. Paul Rademacher and it let you compare the oil spill to various areas in the United States or one of your own choosing. Of course, we're all awed by the some 2500 sq. mi. of oil floating on the Gulf waters but this really brings home the enormity of the situation. Here is a picture of a map I created with Rademacher's tool, showing the oil spill covering the city and environs of Albuquerque.
