Xavier Patiño, vice president and head executive of the Cuenca Chamber of Commerce, recognises the "impressive success" achieved by Coopera. "Not only do they already account for 10 percent of the market in Cuenca, with their own stores, but they have also served to regulate the market," he tells IPS. Patiño believes that Coopera and other cooperatives that operate along a similar model deserve credit for stabilising prices in Cuenca, where there has been zero inflation in recent months. This recognition led Patiño, whose family is involved in agribusiness, to invite Coopera to open an office in the building where the Chamber’s headquarters are located. The office was opened several months ago. Coopera was also invited to open an office in the headquarters of the Chamber of Agriculture of Guayaquil, which has traditionally represented large exporters of bananas, cacao and coffee. The fact that these small farmers from San Joaquín have managed to carve a place for themselves in the world of agribusiness is further testament to their success.

Over 80% of Africans live without access to the electricity grid. However, over 1/3 of the population owns a cell phone and that portion is rapidly growing. Developing nations are leapfrogging from no phone to cell phones - skipping the expensive and unnecessary infrastructure of land lines - and the use of mobile phone technology for everything from agriculture to banking services to health care is helping to improve the quality of life of people living in these areas. However, it still takes a cell phone base station to connect the mobile devices, and those take power. Luckily, there's one new model that takes minimal power, and it's coming to Africa.

Don’t just Shake Your Head about this Coal Video. Do Something. Please.

I’m not going to say much about this video below, except to say that we need to have less of these types of power plants. Coal proponents will point out that much of the steam you see in the video is in fact mostly H20. What’s frightening is all of the arsenic, lead, mercury, nitrogen, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and coal ash that you don’t see being released through the air and into underground water supplies. I’m not even talking about carbon dioxide.
